About This Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Song Guesser handles information when you use songguesser.org, play a music quiz, browse an artist, genre, or decade collection, or report a problem with a question. Song Guesser is designed to work without an account for its public Quick Quiz.

Information We Process

Anonymous gameplay information

When you start a quiz, Song Guesser creates a random browser identifier and stores it in an HttpOnly cookie. We hash that identifier before storing it in our database. We may also store the quiz session, question and answer IDs, whether an answer was correct, score, response timing, playback events, basic visibility events used for fair scoring, and question-quality reports.

This gameplay information is used to run the quiz, prevent duplicate answers, calculate results, replace unavailable previews, investigate reported questions, and improve catalog quality. Public gameplay does not require your name or email address.

Device and request information

Our hosting and security provider may process ordinary request information, such as IP address, browser type, device type, requested URL, timestamps, and security signals. This information supports delivery, abuse prevention, debugging, and service reliability.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic and feature usage. The standard GA4 implementation may collect session statistics, approximate location, browser and device information, and interaction events. GA4 may use first-party cookies such as _ga and _ga_<container-id> to distinguish users and preserve session state. You can restrict cookies in your browser or use Google's available analytics opt-out controls.

We do not intentionally send song answers, free-form reports, names, email addresses, or other directly identifying information to Google Analytics.

Third-Party Audio, Artwork, and Links

Song Guesser references preview audio, artwork, and track links hosted by Apple. Your browser connects directly to Apple-controlled domains when it loads those resources or when you follow an Apple Music link. Apple processes those requests under its own terms and privacy policy. Song Guesser does not download or re-host Apple preview audio.

How We Use Information

We use information only as reasonably necessary to:

• provide, score, and secure the quiz;
• remember an anonymous browser between rounds;
• detect tampering, automated abuse, and invalid gameplay;
• diagnose unavailable audio and other technical failures;
• review reports and maintain a clean, playable catalog;
• measure aggregate audience and product performance; and
• comply with legal obligations and protect our rights.

Sharing and Service Providers

We do not sell personal information. We may disclose limited information to service providers that help operate Song Guesser, including Cloudflare for hosting, database, delivery, and security services, Google for analytics, and Apple when your browser requests preview media. We may also disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect the service, users, or others.

Retention and Security

We retain gameplay and technical information only for as long as it remains useful for operating, securing, and improving Song Guesser or as required by law. Retention periods may vary by record type. We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, but no Internet service can guarantee absolute security.

Your Choices

You may block or delete cookies through your browser. Blocking the anonymous game cookie may cause a quiz session to restart or prevent some gameplay features from working correctly. You may also use browser privacy controls or Google's opt-out tools to limit analytics.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, deletion, correction, restriction, or information about the data associated with you. Because public gameplay is pseudonymous, we may need information from your browser to identify the relevant records.

Children's Privacy

Song Guesser is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the game, providers, or legal requirements change. The date at the top identifies the latest revision. Material changes will be presented through the website when appropriate.
